MBT, or "Masai Barefoot Technology," shoes are designed to simulate a walk in the sand. Billed as 'the world's smallest gym,' the construction of these shoes increase muscle activity, strengthen and tone the leg, buttocks, stomach and back muscles that you use when you're walking or standing for long periods of time.
In the early 1990s, Swiss engineer Karl Müller realized that both shoes and backache are unknown to the Masai tribesmen - and that there is a causal connection between these two facts. By walking barefoot on the natural, soft, uneven ground of their East African homeland, the Masai activate those muscles that atrophy when on a person walks on hard, even surfaces wearing conventional shoes.
Back in Switzerland, Müller began to develop a footwear technology that would make the natural instability of soft ground such as the East African savannah accessible also to those who have to walk on hard surfaces. In 1996, after years spent on research and development, Masai Barefoot Technology was mature enough to be launched on the market. MBTs are now available in over twenty countries, and approximately one million pairs of this revolutionary footwear technology are sold every year.
MBT would like to help people all over the world lead a healthier, more active and happier life. They believe that the benefits of physiologically correct walking can be made available to as many people as possible all over the world, in a straightforward and uncomplicated way. If you want a pair of MBT shoes, all you need to do is decide whether you want MBT technology for sports shoes, casual footwear, sandals and dress or "professional" shoes for men or women.
